Its this time of the year where prices of outbound tour packages drop bottom, commend it to lean time, working class begin all preparations for the new calendar year during this month, thus traveling isn’t an option but what’s worst - travel agencies will come luring us with 70% discount travel coupons, ahh, seriously, this maddens me.

Anyway, if you’ve been clever and have planned your travels well, probably by now you’re already en route to ‘The City Beautiful’ Orlando, yeah; just venting my setbacks here as it’s been a long standing plan to visit Florida but here I am can’t even get out of domestic and academic carousel.

It'll take me around 21 hours by plane from Davao City to reach this castle in Florida.

MANA LIGHTS DAVAO 2011

Seriously, we pass by this place everyday but it was only last night that I had a chance to drop by and took some photos. I would suppose it's not too late for a post yet, I still have a day before the new year, lol.

It's my third year to have taken a photo of this place. This is grander than last year, I would assume it'll be prettier next year. I heard this private entity has spent millions to set-up this place - how generous! I hope they'll be blessed more come 2012 so they can have more lights next year - people, especially the kids really have enjoyed, stuffed our eyes much of this brightness ... glorious!

If you haven't paid a visit yet, Mana Davao is in JP Laurel Ave., Davao City, they're lighting up these trees until Jan. 5, 2012. So bring the whole gang and enjoy!

LAMDAG PARADA in DAVAO 2011

HI everyone! I just came home from Lamdag Parada 2011, I’m inspired to share some of photos straight away so here …

Lamdag Parade (Light Parade) is just one of many Christmas activities incorporated in the Pasko Fiesta sa Davao celebration, this is our city’s version of the famed Disney Electric Light Parade, this is still on its second year but it’s gaining popularity, I hope there’ll be more entries next year, children love it, my kid’s waited.

So here, sharing what I got tonight;

Some guys in lit bicycles joining the parade.

My daughter said, 'where is Cinderella Mama the carriage is leaving', 'maybe still doing the girl-thing', lol.

ABS-CBN's OB van was all lit-up, it's like a mobile-bar ... love it!

Pegasus about to fly, the fluffy whites there are cottons, I wonder how many sacks of cotton they've stuffed in here.. the blue light there made it glorious ...

The back part tells a little twist of the story, somewhat like a leap to another make-believe world, the world of Winnie the Pooh and friends;

This is Davao Crocodile Park's entry, it's like Noah's ark on the move, animals are all over. Some of the guys that came and joined the parade sported their albino snakes, yes, may mga ahas sa gabing di kadiliman, lol.

The ginger bread haus on parade, love this entry, it's well lit though not so grand per my eyes judgment, it's all complete with commercially conceptualized essence of Christmas, not so sure what the basis for judging here but should this float win, it'll take home P150,000.00 as the grand prize.

Praying there'll be more entries next year. Bitin, gamay lang entries.

So even while we travel, just synching our phones to the world wide web, we are still connected. I actually did not know first what's this place called that's why I called it the sky promenade at Gaisano Mall, but I later confirmed its called 'The Peak', my previous post was about this and I promised to post the photos of the fountains that changes its color, so here;

This is yet another cool place here in Davao you can chill out and relax especially at night, it's located at the roof top of Gaisano Mall along JP Laurel Ave., it can be accessed via the food court at the third floor or at the parking area if the mall is already closed.

My son call it his place at the 'Second Life' - if you're an online gaming buff you probably have heard this - It's because of its ultra light and modern architectural design. The center of attraction if the fountain at the center that changes color from time to time, I'll make a separate post on that.

There's Figaro coffee shop and a pizza parlor that's operating currently, I think all shops will open come December. I love this beam, it flickers at night, lovely sight!

DAVAO'S COLORED TAXIS

Commonly we're used to see taxis in white and yellow - well, we too have those shades in Davao, a variety of names carry the white and the yellow one is exclusively carried by Maligaya Taxi. As I write there are roughly around 4,200 taxis plying the roads of Davao - with this number I wonder why sometimes when you need one there is none.

And of course my ever-loved purple one, they carry the name Madayaw Taxi.

And the blue taxi - they're currently hiring lady drivers just in case you ladies out there need some extra. Following the city ordinance that prohibits non-airconditioned taxis on the road + the ever rocketing gas prices - flag down rate for taxis in Davao is now P30.00 for the first 4 kilometers. Other the fixed route jeeneys, taxis are the most convenient transport in the city, if you're a foreigner you don't have to pay extra for the translation, all drivers in town can speak and understand English and all roads signs are written in English.

I'm not sure if I'll be seeing red, pink and green ones in the future.. that remains to be seen.

PEACOCKS IN DAVAO

Yes, there aren't only eagles around here, we too have lots peacocks in Davao.

This one was taken at Eden Nature Park, their birds can freely roam the park, there were countless of them, there was even a white peahen I've been chasing for a photo opp but unfortunately it's fast, it's gone before you can focus a cam.

I took the below photo at the mini-aviary at Paradise Island Resort in Samal Island here, I pity this handsome bird as it's held captive, they were properly taken cared of though, but its different having them in their natural habitat. But for the purposes of education and learning I think it served its purpose, kids love to see real ones even adults ... a reason why we frequent this resort.

If you're in Davao and want to taste the most hearty clam soup in town, you shouldn't miss Dencio's Restaurant. They actually have many branches around town but I frequent the ones in Sasa area. I love it there because of the play area for kids. This is the resto facade.

and my lifetime fave - pork barbeque, lol.

On clear and humid nights, this al fresco area is great for beer bonding with friends.

Not sure though, but I find it interesting that practically all streets of Davao City has this small stalls that repairs 'tired, old' shoe. I find it hard to just throw away some of my used, goodol shoe too, so sometimes I contract the ones near our gate to glue my sloppy soles too... :)

We're packed with so many activities here, your choice of indoor and outdoor fun. this year's festival is handled by Duaw Davao Foundation, a non-profit organization whole sole function is to promote Davao City as a prime destination.

TALIKUD ISLAND - DAVAO

My kids and the rest of the guys at my husband's company went to a secluded, not so exploited island of Talikud here last weekend. I was not able to go with them because of lots of mama chores but they sure had their good time around the island. These photos are my son's captures.

Talikud Island is a small unexploited island adjacent to Samal Island here in Davao. It can be accessed via a 45-minute boat ride from Magsaysay or Sta. Ana Wharf here in Davao. While there are resorts where you can stay overnight, like Isla Reta, it is not really frequented because of the distance. But these guys went out of their way to enjoy their weekend there.

ST. MARY'S CHAPEL

Forgive my being human, but it's been a while - really - that I have not set foot on this chapel, we used to attend novena here every Sunday, but for the past few months we've been eaten up by so much human stuff to do, but yesterday we finally had our chance to lit candle to thank the Almighty of the countless blessings.

This chapel is situated right at the compound of Sto. Nino Shrine in Shrine Hills here in Davao City. It's just some 10 minutes ride from downtown Davao.

I was at the BookSale Shop at NCCC Mall last weekend to scavenge for new book arrivals - I mean not really new, copyrighted 2009, lol. And I spotted this oversized floor decor at the activity area.

AFTERNOON AT ABREEZA

Since Abreeza Mall’s opening on May 12, it was only yesterday that I had returned and check what’s up again around Davao’s newest mall, unlike the opening where people jam-packed and traffic was crazy, yesterday it was all calm and composed.

I was supposed to score one of those Invicta Watches that I coveted the most when we first get there, but I was surprised to see several others that come in low-priced than the Invicta. There were several though but I opted to have one of the Anne Klein Watches on the shelf.

Most of the shops are all serving, scored another bottle of body lotion at Watson’s and had lunch at Max’s.

Although most of the stores, especially brand stores, have high-priced items, which people in Davao find it not too attractive, I think store owner’s just have to be patient a little bit more as Davao buyer’s are still in transition of getting used to seeing items from three to four figures.

Let’s just hope for a stable economy so that people too will have that stable buying power to keep this entire economic infrastructure afloat.

We have a little property in Communal, Cabantian here in Davao City, and one of these days my kingdom will soon rise in that little space, hahahaha! But while I’m still dreaming of where to source the resources to fund my empire might as well explore other places unimagined, some 5-minute ride from my place.

Davao City has something new to offer again, D’ Leonor Hotel Inland Resort, Waterpark and Wavepool, its located in Barangay Communal, Cabantian here, just a 15-minute ride from downtown Davao and a 10-minute ride from the airport. This inland resort lies on a vast mountainous terrains, they have a wavepool and a raging river but still under construction and would be fully operational by June of this year.

The entrance arch of the resort, the blue cordoned area there is where the hotel soon will rise, its still under construction.

They have a chapel perfect for weddings, just across this chapel is a gym and cottages you can stay-on.

This is the picnic area, on a perfect cloudless day you see the whole range of Mt.Apo from here.

and the ever famous string ride, which Davao City popularized of course, a 460m zip line, there'll be cable cars that will be installed around here sometime soon, the tour guide said.

FIRST ASIAN BIRD FAIR IN DAVAO

The first Asian Bird Fair was held here in Davao on Sept. 24-25 at the Insular Hotel grounds here. My kids were excited knowing they could see variety of birds at the fair, but unfortunately it was a birdless fair, as the exposition was mainly organized to promote awareness and educational drive amongst stakeholders.

The fair was participated by hundreds of Bird enthusiast all over Asia, with the aim of primarily promoting awareness of the importance of the birds in our ecosystem, how humans have encroach and destroy their habitat and how will this phenomenon affect humans. It was an eye-opener fair… though the kids was disappointed because there were no live birds to watch on.

What is Kadayawan Festival?

The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting "Madayaw", from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw", meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, with a number of spin-off festivals in the region. The festival honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as its representatives parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city. A celebration that interfaces the three aspects: tribal; industrial and; arts and entertainment. The festivities are highlighted with floral floats, street-dancing competitions and exhibits that showcases the island's tourism products and services.

The Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in 2009 showed that around 12.5 million Filipino families had their roofs made of strong materials and 10 million had their outer walls made of strong materials, obviously, this family's house did not even get a fraction of that statistics.

But even then, the Filipinos are still one of the happiest people on Earth despite not having strong materials for their homes.
